Kensington Neighborhood Series: Transformation

Kensington Neighborhood Series: Transformation

Many of the pieces I make these days reflect the dynamics of the neighborhood I work in, Kensington, Pennsylvania. If you google it, the most common descriptions and news stories include talk about heroin, opioids, poverty, homelessness, prostitution, and crime.

On my daily commute I pass under a bridge that many of the homeless call home. I was reminded that this was in fact a community unto itself. The people are bound together by poverty, addiction, hunger and disease. I wanted to somehow capture their humanity.

Whatever dysfunction may exist there, I have to trust in the idea that a collected group of individuals can support each other through change.

Here, an ash log from the tranquil countryside, combined with resist media and fire, becomes a vessel depicting transformation.
